How to replace wheel bearing and steering knuckle on Mitsubishi car?

The details as follows :----



Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the cotter pin, halfshaft nut and washer.
  4. Raise the vehicle and support safely. If equipped with ABS, remove the front wheel speed sensor. Remove the ball joint and tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  5. Remove the caliper and brake pads and suspend with a wire.
  6. Remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  7. Unbolt the lower end of the strut and remove the hub and steering knuckle assembly.
  8. Press the hub from the bearing and remove the bearing races from the knuckle.
To install:
  1. Install the bearing and hub into the knuckle assembly with pressing tools, using new parts as required. Check the bearing turning torque. It should be 16 inch lbs. or less.
  2. Install the knuckle assembly to the vehicle and install the strut bolts.
  3. Apply a thin coat of grease to the lip of the halfshaft side axle seal and drive into place until it contacts the inner bearing outer race.
  4. Pull the strut assembly out and install the halfshaft to the hub.
  5. Install the washer so the chamfered edge faces outward. Install the nut and tighten to 166 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
  6. Install the tie rod end and ball joint.
  7. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Remove the halfshaft nut.
  3. If equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  4. If equipped with Active Electronic Control Suspension (Active-ECS), disconnect the height sensor from the lower control arm.
  5. Remove the caliper assembly and brake pads. Suspend the caliper with a wire.
  6. Ball joint and tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  7. Remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  8. Unbolt the lower end of the strut and remove the hub and steering knuckle assembly from the vehicle.
  9. Press the hub from the bearing and remove the bearing races from the knuckle.

To install:
  1. Press the wheel bearing into the knuckle. Once the bearing is installed, install the inner race.
  2. Install the grease seal.
  3. Using a pressing, mount the front hub assembly into the knuckle. Tighten the nut of the pressing tool to 144-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm). Rotate the hub to seat the bearing.
  4. Install the hub and knuckle assembly onto the vehicle. Install the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle and install a new nut. Tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  5. Install the halfshaft into the hub/knuckle assembly.
  6. Install 2 front strut lower mounting bolts and tighten to 80-94 ft. lbs. (110-130 Nm) on Mirage or 65-76 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm) on Diamante models.
  7. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) for Mirage and 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) on Diamante models.
  8. Install the brake disc and caliper assembly.
  9. If equipped with Active-ECS, connect the height sensor and tighten the mounting bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10. Install the front speed sensor, if removed.
  11. Install the washer and new locknut to the end of the halfshaft. Tighten the locknut snugly to 144-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm).
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly onto the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

NOTE
The front hub assembly is a sealed unit and should not be disassembled.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove and discard the driveshaft nut cotter pin.
  4. Remove the driveshaft nut, holding the rotor in place with a suitable tool.
  5. If equipped with ABS, remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  6. Unbolt the caliper assembly and suspend out of the way with a piece of wire. Do not disconnect the fluid line.
  7. Use a suitable puller to separate the upper control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  8. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the front hub assembly. Shift the knuckle to the outside in order to keep the clearance between the front hub mounting bolts and driveshaft. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot. If equipped with ABS, be careful not to damage the rotor. 
    NOTE
    If steering knuckle removal is necessary proceed with the following steps.

  9. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the dust shield.
  10. Remove and discard the cotter pin, then separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a puller.
  11. Use a suitable puller to separate the compression and lateral lower control arm ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  12. Unfasten the connecting nut and bolt of the damper fork and lateral lower control arm.
  13. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Position the steering knuckle in the vehicle. Install the connecting bolt and nut and secure hand-tight.
  2. Attach the lateral and compression lower control arm ball joints into the steering knuckle.
  3. Fasten the tie rod end ball joint to the steering knuckle, then install the retaining nut and tighten to 17-25 ft. lbs. (24-33 Nm). Install a new cotter pin and bend over securely.
  4. Install the dust shield and secure with the retaining bolt. 6.5 ft. lbs. (8.5 Nm).
  5. Position the front hub assembly, then secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  6. Fasten the upper control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  7. Install the brake disc (rotor) and caliper.
  8. If equipped, install the front wheel speed sensor.
  9. Install the driveshaft nut. Hold the rotor in position while tightening the driveshaft nut to 145-188 ft. lbs. (196-255 Nm). If the cotter pin holes does not match, tighten the nut up to 188 ft. lbs. (225 Nm) maximum. Install a new cotter pin in the first matching holes, then bend it over securely.
  10. Install the wheel and tire assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    Axle nut
    Wheel speed sensor, vehicles with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS)
    Caliper and suspend it out of the way with wire or string
    Brake rotor
    Steering knuckle from the upper arm
  2. Pull the knuckle away from the vehicle to access the hub mounting bolts on the inboard side of the hub. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot or the ABS rotor if equipped.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts and the front hub assembly.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the hub assembly. If binding or damaged, it must be replaced as a unit. To install:
  4. Install or connect the following:

    Hub to the knuckle. Torque the mounting bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
    Knuckle to the upper arm
    Brake rotor and the caliper
    Wheel speed sensor if removed
    Axle nut and tighten to 145-188 ft. lbs. (196-255 Nm)
    Wheel and lower the vehicle to the floor
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove the dust cover. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the driveshaft locknut. Remove the washer.
  3. Remove the front wheel speed sensor bracket. Remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the brake hose bracket. Remove the brake caliper and wire it to the side. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper.
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6. Remove the front wheel hub mounting bolts while pushing out the driveshaft by hand.
  7. If it is difficult to push out the driveshaft by hand, use special tools MB990242, MB990244, MB991354 and MB990767 to push out the driveshaft from the hub and knuckle.
  8. If the front wheel hub is seized, remove the knuckle together with the front wheel hub.
  9. Support the driveshaft on the vehicle body with rope.
  10. To remove the knuckle proceed as follows.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the nut from the ball joint. Loosen it and use special tool MB991897 to avoid possible damage to the ball joint threads. Hang the special tool in place with wire or string to prevent it from falling.
  11. To disconnect the lower arm from the knuckle, replace the self locking nut for the lower arm ball joint with a regular nut. This is done because the original one is too large to install the special tool. Install special tool MB991897.
  12. Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of the tool parallel. Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel.
    NOTE
    When adjusting the jaws in parallel, make sure the knob is in the vertical (upward) position.
  13. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the ball joint.
  14. Remove the steering knuckle dust cover.
  15. Remove the strut to knuckle retaining bolts. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. To install:
  16. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  17. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Appropriate wheel assembly
    Cotter pin, halfshaft nut and washer
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS(), if equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS)
    Caliper and brake pads. Support the caliper out of the way using wire.
    Brake rotor from the hub assembly
    Upper ball joint from the steering knuckle and pull the knuckle outward
  3. From the back of the knuckle, remove the 4 bolts securing the hub to the knuckle.
  4. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    The hub assembly is not serviceable and should not be disassembled.
To install
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub to the steering knuckle and tighten the mounting bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
    Upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the self-locking nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
    Axle washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 145-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm).
  2. Position the rotor on the hub.
  3. Install the caliper holder and the brake caliper.
  4. If equipped with ABS, install the VSS.
  5. Install the wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove the dust cover. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the driveshaft locknut. Remove the washer.
  3. Remove the front wheel speed sensor bracket. Remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the brake hose bracket. Remove the brake caliper and wire it to the side. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper.
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6. Remove the front wheel hub mounting bolts while pushing out the driveshaft by hand.
  7. If it is difficult to push out the driveshaft by hand, use special tools MB990242, MB990244, MB991354 and MB990767 to push out the driveshaft from the hub and knuckle.
  8. If the front wheel hub is seized, remove the knuckle together with the front wheel hub.
  9. Support the driveshaft on the vehicle body with rope.
  10. To remove the knuckle proceed as follows.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the nut from the ball joint. Loosen it and use special tool MB991897 to avoid possible damage to the ball joint threads. Hang the special tool in place with wire or string to prevent it from falling.
  11. To disconnect the lower arm from the knuckle, replace the self locking nut for the lower arm ball joint with a regular nut. This is done because the original one is too large to install the special tool. Install special tool MB991897.
  12. Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of the tool parallel. Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel.
    NOTE
    When adjusting the jaws in parallel, make sure the knob is in the vertical (upward) position.
  13. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the ball joint.
  14. Remove the steering knuckle dust cover.
  15. Remove the strut to knuckle retaining bolts. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. To install:
  16. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  17. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following: 
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the hub assembly. If binding or damaged, it must be replaced as a unit.



    Front wheel
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS), vehicles with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS)
    Caliper and suspend it out of the way with wire or string
    Brake rotor
    Axle nut, using special tool MB990767 to hold the hub secure while removing the nut. Discard the nut.
    Stabilizer bar from the lower control arm
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Do not remove the nut from the tie rod end. Loosen the nut and use special tool MB991113 or MB990635 to avoid damaging the threads.

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and knuckle assembly
    Front strut-to-hub bolt and nut. Torque to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm).
    Halfshaft
    Tie rod end. Torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Lower control arm ball joint. Tighten the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Stabilizer bar
    New axle nut and washer and tighten to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
    Brake rotor and caliper. Torque the caliper bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    Front WSS, if equipped
    Front wheel
  2. Lower the vehicle
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Remove the halfshaft nut.
  3. If equipped with ABS, remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  4. If equipped with Active Electronic Control Suspension (Active-ECS), disconnect the height sensor from the lower control arm.
  5. Remove the caliper assembly and brake pads. Suspend the caliper with a wire.
  6. Using a suitable ball joint separator tool, disconnect the ball joint and tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  7. Remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  8. Unbolt the lower end of the strut and remove the hub and steering knuckle assembly from the vehicle.
  9. Remove the hub, bearings and races as follows:
    NOTE
    Do not use a hammer to accomplish this or the bearing will be damaged.

    1. Remove the oil seal from the axle side of the knuckle using a small prying tool.
    2. Remove the wheel bearing inner race from the front hub using a puller.
      NOTE
      Be careful that the front hub does not fall when the inner race is removed.
    3. Remove the snapring from the axle side of the knuckle. Remove the bearing from the knuckle using a puller.
    4. Once the bearing is removed, the bearing outer race can be removed by tapping out with a brass drift pin and a hammer.
To install:
  1. Install the hub, bearings, and races as follows:
    1. Fill the wheel bearing with multipurpose grease. Apply a thin coating of multipurpose grease to the knuckle and bearing contact surfaces.
    2. Press the wheel bearing into the knuckle using an appropriate pressing tool. Once the bearing is installed, install the inner race using the proper driving tool.
    3. Drive the oil seal into the knuckle using the proper size driver. Drive seal into knuckle until it is flush with the knuckle end surface.
    4. Using pressing tool MB990998 or equivalent, mount the front hub assembly into the knuckle. Tighten the nut of the pressing tool to 144-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm). Rotate the hub to seat the bearing.
    5. Mount the knuckle assembly in a vise. Check the hub assembly turning torque and end-play as follows:

      Using a torque wrench and socket MB990998 or equivalent, turn the hub in the knuckle assembly. Note the reading on the torque wrench and compare to the desired reading of 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm) or less. This is known as the breakaway torque.
      Check for roughness when turning the bearing.
      Mount a dial indicator on the hub so the pointer contacts the machined surface on the hub.
      Check the end-play.
      Compare the reading to the limit of 0.002 in. (0.05mm).
    6. If the starting torque or the hub end-play are not within specifications while the nut is tightened to 144-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm), the bearing, hub or knuckle have probably not been installed correctly. Repeat the disassembly and assembly procedure and recheck starting torque and end-play. 


  2. Install the hub and knuckle assembly onto the vehicle. Install the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle and install a new nut. Tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  3. Install the halfshaft into the hub/knuckle assembly.
  4. Install the two front strut lower mounting bolts and tighten to 80-94 ft. lbs. (110-130 Nm) on Mirage or 65-76 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm) on Diamante models.
  5. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) for Mirage and 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) on Diamante models
  6. Install the brake disc and caliper assembly.
  7. If equipped with Active-ECS, connect the height sensor and tighten the mounting bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8. Install the front speed sensor, if removed.
  9. Install the washer and new locknut to the end of the halfshaft. Tighten the locknut snugly to 144-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm).
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly onto the vehicle.
  11. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
Evolution
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove the front under cover. Remove the side under cover.
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid. Drain the transfer case fluid.
  4. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the driveshaft nut and washer.
  5. Remove the front ABS sensor. Remove the brake caliper and position it to the side with wire. Do not disconnect the brake line hose.
  6. Remove the rotor. Remove the steering knuckle dust cover.
  7. Separate the connection for the lower arm ball joint.
  8. Remove the locknut for the tie rod end connection.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the nut from the ball joint. Loosen it and use special tool MB991897 to avoid possible damage to the ball joint threads. Hang the special tool in place with wire or string to prevent it from falling.
  9. To disconnect the lower arm from the knuckle, replace the self locking nut for the lower arm ball joint with a regular nut. This is done because the original one is too large to install the special tool. Install special tool MB991897.
  10. Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of the tool parallel. Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel.
    NOTE
    When adjusting the jaws in parallel, make sure the knob is in the vertical (upward) position.
  11. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the ball joint.
  12. Using special tool MB990241 (MB990242, MB990244), MB991354 and MB990767 to push out the driveshaft from the hub and knuckle.
  13. Withdraw the driveshaft from the hub by pulling the bottom of the hub and knuckle toward you. Support the driveshaft on the vehicle body with a rope.
  14. Remove the front strut to hub and knuckle mounting bolt.
  15. Remove the hub and knuckle assembly from the vehicle.
  16. Separate the knuckle from the hub and bearing assembly. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  18. Be sure to refill the transfer case and the transaxle, with the proper grade and type fluids.
  19. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.

The front and rear wheel bearings on these vehicles are not adjustable. If the bearings are noisy or become loose, they must be replaced.

Cleaning & Repacking




NOTE
Sodium based grease is not compatible with lithium based grease. Read the package labels and be careful not to mix the two types. If there is any doubt as to the type of grease used, completely clean the old grease from the bearing and hub before replacing.

Before handling the bearings, there are a few things that you should remember to do and not to do.
DO the following:


Remove all outside dirt from the housing before exposing the bearing.
Treat a used bearing as gently as you would a new one.
Work with clean tools in clean surroundings.
Use clean, dry gloves, or at least clean, dry hands.
Clean solvents and flushing fluids are a must.
Use clean paper when laying out the bearings to dry.
Protect disassembled bearings from rust and dirt. Cover them up.
Use clean, lint-free rags to wipe the bearings.
Keep the bearings in oil-proof paper when they are to be stored or are not in use.
Clean the inside of the housing before replacing the bearing.

Do NOT do the following:


Do not work in dirty surroundings.
Do not use dirty, chipped or damaged tools.
Do not work on wooden work benches or use wooden mallets.
Do not handle bearings with dirty or moist hands.
Do not use gasoline for cleaning. Use a safe solvent.
Do not spin dry bearings with compressed air. They will be damaged.
Do not use cotton waste or dirty cloths to wipe bearings.
Do not scratch or nick bearing surfaces.
Do not allow the bearing to come in contact with dirt or rust at any time.

The rear wheel bearings on some Galant and Mirage models require periodic maintenance. A premium high melting point grease meeting Grade Multipurpose Grease NLGI Grade #2 or equivalent must be used. Long fiber type greases must not be used. This service is recommended every 30,000 miles (48,000 km).


  1. Remove the wheel bearing.
  2. Clean all parts in a non-flammable solvent and let them air dry.

NOTE
Only use lint-free rags to dry the bearings. Never spin-dry a bearing with compressed air, as this will damage the rollers.

  1. Check for excessive wear and damage. Replace the bearing as necessary.

NOTE
Packing wheel bearings with grease is best accomplished by using a wheel bearing packer (available at most automotive parts stores).

  1. If a wheel bearing packer is not available, the bearings may be packed by hand.
  1. Place a "healthy" glob of grease in the palm of one hand.
  2. Force the edge of the bearing into the grease so that the grease fills the space between the rollers and the bearing cage.
  3. Keep rotating the bearing while continuing to push the grease through.
  4. Continue until the grease is forced out the other side of the bearing.
  1. Place the packed bearing on a clean surface and cover it until it is time for installation.
  2. Install the wheel bearing.
