Cylinder Head Replacing Procedure for 4.2L engine?


The procedure is similar for both ford and Lincoln car models:-----

Cylinder Head 
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

F150 1/2 ton P/U 2WD/ 4WD
F250 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F350 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F450 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F550 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD

AND Lincoln Mark LT Models

4.2L Engine
CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF. The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
Both cylinder heads
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove the lower intake manifold.
  3. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
RH cylinder head
  1. Remove the bolt and the upper idler pulley.
  2. Remove the 4 bolts and position the generator bracket, the generator, the accessory drive belt tensioner and the accessory drive belt idler pulley aside as an assembly.
  3. Remove the bolt and position the radio interference capacitor aside.
  4. Remove the RH exhaust manifold.
  5. Detach the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector retainer from the rear of the RH cylinder head. Remove the bolt and detach the ground wire.
  6. Remove the push rods from the RH cylinder head. For additional information, refer to Push Rod in this section.
LH cylinder head
  1. If equipped, remove the A/C compressor.
  2. Remove the nuts for the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace.
  3. Remove the A/C compressor mounting and power steering bracket brace upper bolt. Loosen the lower bolt and position it forward until it contacts the power steering pulley. Position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace aside.
  4. Loosen the remaining bolt in the A/C compressor and power steering bracket. Position it forward until it contacts the power steering pulley and position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket aside.
  5. Remove the LH exhaust manifold.
  6. Disconnect the KS and CHT sensor electrical connectors. Detach the HO2S electrical connector retainer from the rear of the LH cylinder head.
  7. Remove the push rods from the LH cylinder head.
Both cylinder heads
  1. Remove the 2 cylinder block coolant drain plugs.
  2. Remove and discard the 4 short and 4 long cylinder head bolts.
  3. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Discard the gasket.

To install:

CAUTION
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.


CAUTION
Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep.


NOTE
If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces.

  1. Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surface of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
  2. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper.
  3. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions and allow to set for several minutes.
  4. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain.
  5. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.
  6. Inspect the cylinder head for distortion.
    CAUTION
    The use of sealing aids (aviation cement, copper spray and glue) is not permitted. The gasket must be installed dry.


    CAUTION
    The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts installed. They are tighten-to-yield and cannot be reused.


    NOTE
    Install the new cylinder head gaskets with the small hole to the front of the engine.
  7. Position a new cylinder head gasket and the cylinder head.
    CAUTION
    Always use new bolts.


    NOTE
    Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  8. Install the new bolts. Make sure the short and long bolts are installed in the correct locations.

  9. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 3 stages:
    1. Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    2. Stage 2: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    3. Stage 3: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
      CAUTION
      Each bolt must be loosened and the final tightening carried out prior to working on the next bolt in the sequence. Do not loosen all of the bolts at one time.

  10. Carry out the following final tightening process on each bolt in the sequence shown:
Long bolts:
  1. Loosen and back out 3 turns.
  2. Tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft).
  3. Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
  4. Continue on to the next bolt in the sequence.
Short bolts
  1. Loosen and back out 3 turns.
  2. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  3. Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
  4. Continue on to the next bolt in the sequence.
  1. Apply thread sealant to the drain plug threads and install the 2 cylinder block coolant drain plugs. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
LH cylinder head
  1. Install the push rods in the LH cylinder head.
  2. Connect the KS and CHT electrical connectors. Attach the HO2S electrical connector to the rear of the LH cylinder head.
  3. Install the LH exhaust manifold.
  4. Position back the A/C compressor and power steering bracket and loosely install the bolt.
  5. Position back the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the 3 bolts. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  6. Install the nuts for the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  7. Install the A/C compressor.
RH cylinder head
  1. Install the push rods in the RH cylinder head.
  2. Attach the HO2S electrical connector retainer to the rear of the RH cylinder head. Position the ground wire and install the bolt. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Install the RH exhaust manifold.
  4. Position the radio interference capacitor and install the bolt. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  5. Position the generator bracket, the generator, the accessory drive belt tensioner and the accessory drive belt idler pulley as an assembly and install the 3 bolts. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  6. Position the upper idler pulley and install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
Both cylinder heads
  1. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
  2. Install the lower intake manifold.
