How to Remove 5VZ-FE Engine on Toyota 4Runner?


The procedure mentioned here is for Toyota 4Runner engine removal and installation details.Its for 5VZ-FE engine removal..
The details are mentioned with helping diagrams too for better understanding.



Its for both 2wheel drive as well as for 4 wheel drive models.


5vz-FE Engine
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, please refer the following topic(s): Fuel System, Relieving Fuel System Pressure.
  3. Remove the engine under cover.
  4. Drain the engine coolant.
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6. Remove the hood.
  7. Remove the radiator.
  8. Remove the fan with the fluid coupling and the fan pulleys.
  9. Remove the air intake assembly.
  10. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
  11. Disconnect the following hoses:

    Heater hoses
    Evaporative emissions (EVAP) hose
    CCV hose
    Fuel return and supply hoses
  12. Disconnect the starter wire and connector as follows:
    1. Remove the bolt that retains the ground strap.
    2. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
    3. Disconnect the starter wires and connectors.
  13. Disconnect the alternator harness.
  14. Disconnect the engine wire from the cabin area as follows:
    1. Remove the glove compartment door.
    2. Remove the lower finish No.2 panel.
    3. Disconnect the 5 Electronic Control Module (ECM) connectors.
    4. Disconnect the 2 cassette connectors (cowl wire x engine wire) and 2 wire clamps from the lower finish panel.
    5. Disconnect the engine wire clamp.
    6. Disconnect the igniter connector.
    7. Disconnect the ground strap.
    8. Disconnect the VSV connector for the EVAP.
    9. Disconnect the VSV connector for the CCV and clamp.
    10. Remove the bolt and wire bracket.
    11. Remove the 2 nuts holding the engine wire retainer to the cowl panel, and pull out the engine wire from the cabin.
  15. Remove the driveshaft.
  16. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
    NOTE
    Do not lose the felt protector and washers from the speedometer cable.
  17. Remove the front exhaust pipe as follows:
    1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor.
    2. Remove the two bolts and retainer holding the front pipe to the catalytic converter.
    3. Remove the three bolts and the support bracket.
    4. Loosen and remove the three nuts holding the front pipe and gaskets.

  18. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  19. Remove the 8 bolts holding the rear engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator and crossmember.
  20. If equipped with A/C, remove the bolt and disconnect the A/C compressor wire clamp.
  21. Attach an engine hoist chain to the two engine hangers.

  22. Remove the four bolts and nuts holding the engine front mounting insulators to the frame.
  23. Carefully lift the engine with transmission out of the vehicle
    NOTE
    Make sure the engine is clear of all wiring and hoses.
To install:
  1. Lower the engine and transmission assembly into the engine compartment.
  2. Keeping the engine level, align the engine mountings and body mountings.
  3. Attach the engine mounting insulators to the body mountings, and temporarily install the four bolts and nuts.
  4. Using a suitable jack, raise the transmission onto the frame.
  5. Remove the engine chain hoist and engine hanger.
  6. If equipped with A/C, connect the A/C compressor wire with the bolt.
  7. Raise the transmission slightly by raising the engine with a suitable jack with a wooden block to prevent damage to the transmission.
  8. Install the engine rear mounting bracket to the frame and tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  9. Lower the transmission and rest it on the extension housing.
  10. Install the mounting bracket to the mounting insulator and tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  11. Tighten the four bolts and nuts holding the mounting insulators to the body mountings. Tighten the nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).

  12. Attach the front exhaust pipe:
    1. Install the gaskets and attach the pipe to the engine with new mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    2. Install the support bracket and tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    3. Connect the exhaust pipe with a new gasket to the catalytic converter. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    4. Connect the two heated oxygen sensors.
  13. Connect the speedometer cable.
  14. Install the driveshaft.
  15. Connect the engine wiring harness into the cabin:
    1. Push in the engine wiring harness through the cowl panel and install the two nuts, bolt and bracket.
    2. Connect the engine wiring harness clamp.
    3. Connect the ground strap.
    4. Connect the igniter connector.
    5. Connect the VSV connector for the EVAP.
    6. Connect the VSV connector for the CCV and clamp.
    7. Connect the five connectors to the ECM.
    8. Connect the two cassette connectors.
    9. Install the ECM with the 2 bolts.
    10. Install the lower finish No.2 panel.
    11. Install the glove compartment door.

  16. Connect the alternator wires.
  17. Connect the starter wiring:
    1. Connect the 2 starter wire clamps and connector.
    2. Install the two nuts, and connect the positive (+) terminal cable to the battery.
    3. Connect the ground strap with the bolt.
    4. Connect the wire from relay block No.2 with the nut.
  18. Connect the following hoses:
    NOTE
    Always use a new gasket when reconnecting the fuel hoses.



    Connect the fuel return hose.
    Connect the fuel inlet hose



    Connect the EVAP hose.
    Connect the CCV hose.
    Heater hoses
  19. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
  20. Install the fan with the fluid coupling and the fan pulley.
  21. Install the air intake assembly.
  22. Install the radiator.
  23. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  24. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  25. Install the engine under covers.
  26. Install the hood.
  27. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  28. Recheck the engine oil and coolant levels.
2wd
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hood
    Battery
    Engine under covers
  4. Drain the engine coolant.
  5. Drain the engine oil.

    Radiator
    Fan with the fluid coupling and fan pulleys
    Air cleaner cap
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter and the resonator
    Air cleaner case and filter
  6. Disconnect the following hoses:

    Heater hoses
    Brake booster vacuum hose
    Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) hose
    Fuel return hose
    Fuel inlet hose
  7. Detach the starter wire and connectors, as follows:

    Ground strap, by removing the bolt
    3 starter wire clamps and connector
  8. Detach the alternator connector and wire.
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness, as follows:

    Glove box door
    Lower the finish No. 2 panel
    4 ECM connectors
    2 cassette connectors and the 2 wire clamps from the lower finish panel
    Engine wiring harness clamp
  10. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Igniter connector
    Ground strap
    Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) connector for the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP)
    Vapor pressure sensor connector and clamp
    Vapor connector for the vapor pressure sensor and clamp
    2 engine wiring harness retainer-to-cowl panel nuts and pull out the engine wiring harness
    Driveshaft from the transmission
    Speedometer cable
    Front exhaust pipe
    Nut and the control cable
  11. Place a jack under the transmission.
  12. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission rear mounting bracket by removing the 8 bolts
    Bolt and the air conditioning compressor wire clamp, if equipped with air conditioning
  13. If necessary, install a No. 2 engine hanger with 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  14. Attach the engine hoist chain to the 2 engine hangers.
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 engine front mounting insulators-to-frame bolts and nuts
    Engine and transmission
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine
    Engine mounts to the body mountings. Install the bolts and nuts but do not tighten at this time.
  2. Remove the engine chain hoist the No. 2 engine hanger.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Air conditioning wire with the bolt, if equipped with air conditioning
    Transmission mounting bracket. Tighten the frame bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) and the mounting insulator bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    Tighten the engine mounting nuts and bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
    Control cable
    Front exhaust pipe
    Speedometer cable
    Driveshaft
    All engine wiring harness, hoses and cables
    Fan with the fluid coupling and fan pulleys. Tighten the nuts to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
    Air cleaner case and air filter
    MAF meter, resonator and the air cleaner cap
    Radiator
  4. Fill the engine with oil.
  5. Fill the engine and radiator with coolant.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Engine under-cover
    Battery
    Hood
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8. Make any necessary adjustments and road test the vehicle.
4wd
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
    Hood
  3. Release the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery
    Engine undercovers
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6. Drain the engine oil.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator
    Fan with the fluid coupling and fan pulleys
    Air cleaner cap
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter and the resonator
  8. Disconnect the following hoses:

    Heater hoses
    Brake booster vacuum hose
    Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) hose
    Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) vacuum hose
    Fuel return hose
    Fuel inlet hose
  9. Detach the starter wire and connectors, as follows:

    Ground strap, by removing the bolt
    3 starter wire clamps and connector
  10. Detach the alternator connector and wire.
  11. Disconnect the engine wiring harness, as follows:

    Glove box door
    Lower the finish No. 2 panel
    4 ECM connectors
    2 cassette connectors and the 2 wire clamps from the lower finish panel
    Engine wiring harness clamp
  12. Disconnect the following:

    Igniter connector
    Ground strap
    Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) connector for the EVAP
    Vapor pressure sensor connector and clamp
    Vapor connector for the vapor pressure sensor and clamp
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    2 engine wiring harness retainer-to-cowl panel nuts and wiring harness
    Air conditioning compressor wire clamp, if equipped with air conditioning
  14. If necessary, install a No. 2 engine hanger with 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  15. Attach the engine hoist chain to the 2 engine hangers.
  16. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 engine front mounting insulators-to-frame bolts and nuts
    Engine
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine
    Engine mounts-to-body mountings. Install the bolts and nuts but do not tighten at this time.
  2. Remove the engine chain hoist the No. 2 engine hanger.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Air conditioning wire with the bolt, if equipped with air conditioning
    Tighten the engine mounting nuts and bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
    Engine wiring harness
    Engine wiring harness clamp
    All wires, hoses and cables
    Fan with the fluid coupling and fan pulleys. Tighten the nuts to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
    Air cleaner case and air filter
    MAF meter, resonator and the air cleaner cap
    Radiator
  4. Fill the engine with oil.
  5. Fill the engine and radiator with coolant.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission and refill it with transmission oil
    Engine undercover
    Battery
    Hood
  7. Start the engine, make any necessary adjustments and check for leaks.
