How To replace 4.6L Engine on Ford Truck?


The procedure is similar for both ford and Lincoln car models:-----

The procedure is for Ford Model F series Trucks.
And Lincoln Mark LT model vehicles.
F150 1/2 ton P/U 2WD/ 4WD
F250 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F350 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F450 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD
F550 Super Duty P/U 2WD/4WD

The procedure to replace 4.6 L engine is as follows:----

Removal & Installation


4.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the hood.
  4. Remove the intake manifold. See -Intake Manifold- in this section.
  5. Remove the radiator.
  6. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) and the support bracket.
  7. Remove the cowl panel grille.
  8. Detach the wiring harness and the windshield washer hose from the cowl panel extension.
  9. Remove the bolts and the cowl panel extension.
  10. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the bolt and the ground strap.
  11. Disconnect the heater hose.
  12. Remove the nut and the A/C manifold and tube assembly support bracket.
  13. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  14. Disconnect the degas bottle (coolant reservoir) coolant hose.
  15. Remove the bolts and position the power steering reservoir assembly aside.
  16. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley.
  17. Disconnect the power steering pressure tube. Drain the power steering fluid into a suitable container.
  18. Remove the nut and position aside the power steering pressure tube.
  19. Remove the power steering pump bolts and position the power steering pump assembly aside.
  20. Remove the starter.
  21. Disconnect the crankcase position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and harness retainer.
  22. If equipped, remove the nut and the transmission cooler tube support bracket.
  23. Remove the bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.
  24. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
  25. Detach the starter electrical harness support from the cylinder block.
  26. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
  27. Remove the oil filter.
  28. Remove the bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.
  29. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
  30. Remove the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Discard the nuts.
  31. Disconnect the left heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO 2 S) electrical connector and detach the electrical connector retainer.
  32. Disconnect the shift cable and remove the shift cable bracket.
    NOTE
    The left upper transmission-to-engine bolt will be removed later.
  33. Remove the 6 transmission-to-engine bolts.
  34. Remove the bolt and position the transmission fluid filler tube aside.
  35. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold flange nuts.
  36. Remove the right motor mount nuts.
  37. Remove the left motor mount bolt.
  38. Support the transmission.
    NOTE
    On 4x4 vehicles, it may be necessary to reposition the transfer case vent hose to access the bolt.
  39. Remove the left upper transmission-to-engine bolt.
  40. Install the lifting bracket.
    NOTE
    Raise the engine and position forward to disconnect the transmission wiring harness retainer at the rear of the right cylinder head and disconnect the right heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO 2 S) electrical connector and detach the electrical connector retainer.
  41. Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
To install:

WARNING
Clean the engine support insulator-to-frame mating surfaces of any dirt or foreign material prior to engine installation.


NOTE
Position the engine assembly forward to connect the right heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO 2 S) electrical connector and the transmission harness retainers at the rear of the cylinder head.

  1. Using a suitable floor crane, position the engine assembly into the vehicle.
  2. Apply High Strength Threadlocker to the bolt threads and install the left engine support insulator bolt.
    1. If the engine support insulator nut is missing or damaged, install a new nut using service part number W709375.
    2. If the engine support insulator nut cage is damaged or missing, install a new nut using service part number W520516-S301. Tighten to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
  3. Apply High Strength Threadlocker to the bolt threads and install the right engine support insulator washer and nuts. Tighten to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
  4. Install the 6 transmission-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
  5. Connect the shift cable and install the shift cable bracket and the bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
  6. Connect the left heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO 2 S) electrical connector and attach the electrical connector retainer. 
    NOTE
    Lubricate the O-ring seals with clean transmission fluid.
  7. Position the transmission fluid filler tube and install the bolt. Tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
  8. Install the 4 exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts. Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  9. Install the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
  10. Install the cylinder block opening cover.
  11. Install the flexplate inspection cover. Tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
  12. Install a new oil filter.
  13. Install the drain plug. Tighten to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
  14. Attach the starter electrical harness support to the cylinder block. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  15. If equipped, connect the block heater electrical connector.
  16. Position the A/C compressor and install the bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
  17. Install the starter.
  18. Position the power steering reservoir and install the 2 lower bolts. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
  19. Position the power steering pump and install the bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
  20. Using the special tool, install a new O-ring seal on the pressure line fitting.
  21. Connect the power steering pressure tube. Tighten to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
  22. Position the power steering pressure tube support bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
    WARNING
    If the pulley has been removed and installed twice, install a new power steering pump pulley.
  23. Install the power steering pump pulley. Inspect the pulley for paint marks in the web area near the hub. If there are 2 paint marks, install a new pulley. If there is one paint mark or none at all, use a pencil to mark the web area of the pulley near the hub.
  24. If equipped, install the transmission cooler tube support bracket and nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  25. Connect the degas bottle (coolant reservoir) coolant hose.
  26. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  27. Connect the crankcase position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and the harness retainer.
  28. Position the A/C manifold and tube assembly support bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  29. Remove the lifting bracket.
  30. Install the upper transmission-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
  31. Connect the heater coolant hose.
  32. Install the ground strap and the bolt and connect the electrical connector. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  33. Install the cowl panel extension.
  34. Attach the wiring harness and the windshield washer hose to the cowl panel extension.
  35. Install the cowl panel grill.
  36. Install the powertrain control module (PCM) and the support bracket.
  37. Install the intake manifold.
  38. Install the radiator.
  39. Install the hood and the 4 bolts. Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
  40. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
  41. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
