How to replace Exhaust System CATALYTIC CONVERTER on Ford and Mercury?

The details for Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable car model is similar.

Instructions are as follows :---


Catalytic Converter



Removal & Installation
Left Side
Specific to:
Ford Taurus 2008-2009
Mercury Sable 2008-2009

NOTE
Always install new fasteners and gaskets. Clean flange faces prior to new gasket installation to make sure of correct sealing.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Disconnect the Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector.
  3. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe.
  4. Remove the 2 catalytic converter support bracket-to-transmission bolts.
  5. Remove the 4 nuts and the LH catalytic converter.
  6. Discard the nuts and gasket.
  7. Inspect the exhaust manifold studs for damage. If damaged, replace stud(s), or if stud comes out when removing nut(s), replace the stud(s).
To install:

NOTE
Always install new fasteners and gaskets. Clean flange faces prior to new gasket installation to make sure of correct sealing.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Tighten exhaust manifold stud(s) to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Tighten the 2 catalytic converter support bracket-to-transmission bolts. to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  4. Tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
Rear
Specific to:
Ford Taurus 2008-2009
Mercury Sable 2008-2009
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove and discard the 2 exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts.
  3. Discard the gasket.
  4. Loosen the Torca® clamp nut.
  5. Separate the catalytic converter from the muffler and tailpipe and remove the catalytic converter.
To install:

NOTE
Always install new gaskets and exhaust fasteners.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Tighten the Torca® clamp nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  3. Tighten the 2 exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
Right Side
Specific to:
Ford Taurus 2008-2009
Mercury Sable 2008-2009

NOTE
Always install new fasteners and gaskets. Clean flange faces prior to new gasket installation to make sure of correct sealing.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe.
  3. Remove the RH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS).
  4. Remove the 2 bracket-to-RH catalytic converter bolts.
  5. Remove the 4 nuts and the RH catalytic converter.
  6. Discard the nuts and gasket.
  7. Inspect the exhaust manifold studs for damage. If damaged, replace stud(s), or if stud comes out when removing nut(s), replace the stud(s).
  8. Discard the nuts and gasket.
  9. Inspect the exhaust manifold studs for damage.
  10. If damaged, replace stud(s), or if stud comes out when removing nut(s), replace the stud(s).
To install:

NOTE
Always install new fasteners and gaskets. Clean flange faces prior to new gasket installation to make sure of correct sealing.

  1. Tighten exhaust manifold stud(s) to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2. Tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  3. Tighten the 2 bracket-to-RH catalytic converter bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
