How to Replace Steering Wheel on Toyota Highlander?

Removal & Installation details for Toyota Highlander and Hybrid Steering wheel replacing details procedure.

The Procedure with proper details and diagrams is as follows:----


  1. Make sure the steering wheel is centered and the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  2. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF , then disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  3. Remove the no. 2 lower steering wheel cover. 
    WARNING
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON, DTCs will be recorded.

    1. Using a Torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx
    2. screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    3. Pull out the wheel pad/airbag module from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    4. Disconnect the terminal and horn connector. 
      WARNING
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Never disassemble the wheel pad. When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  4. Remove the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2. Matchmark the installed position of the steering wheel and main shaft.
    3. Using a suitable Steering wheel puller, Special Service Tools (SST) SST 09950- 50013 (09951- 05010, 09952- 05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), or equivalents remove the steering wheel from the shaft.

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Position the steering wheel on the mainshaft, making sure to align the matchmarks made during removal.
    2. Install the steering wheel set nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  2. Attach the connector.
    WARNING
    Never use airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones. Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque. If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one. When installing the wheel pad, take care so that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Install the horn button, as follows:
    2. Connect the terminal.
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
    5. Using a Torx® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
  3. Install the No. 2 lower steering wheel cover, as follows:
  4. Connect the negative battery cable and then verify that the SRS is operating properly.

Hybrid



  1. Place the vehicle-s front wheels facing straight ahead.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from negative battery terminal and wait AT LEAST 90 seconds before proceeding.
  3. Remove the instrument panel lower finish panel, as follows:
  4. Use a suitable prytool to carefully remove the lower steering wheel cover no.3.

  6. Remove the steering pad, as follows:
    1. Using a T30 Torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    2. Pull out the steering pad from the steering wheel assembly and support the steering pad with one Hand.
      WARNING
      When removing the steering pad, do not pull the airbag wire harness.
    3. Disconnect the horn connector.
    4. Disconnect the 2 connectors from the steering pad.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
    5. Remove the steering pad.
  7. Remove steering wheel assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    2. Matchmark the installed position of the steering wheel on the wheel and main shaft assembly.
    3. Using Special Tools 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), or their equivalents, remove the steering wheel assembly.

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
    2. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  2. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
  3. Install the steering pad, as follows:
    1. Support the steering pad with one hand.
    2. Connect the 2 connectors to the steering pad.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
    3. Connect the horn connector.
    4. Confirm that the circumference groove of the Torx® screw fits in the screw case, and place the steering pad onto the steering wheel assembly.
    5. Using a T30 Torx® socket wrench, tighten the 2 screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
  4. Install the lower steering wheel cover no.3.
  5. Install the lower steering wheel cover no.2.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Inspect the SRS warning light. When you turn the ignition switch ON , it should go on for about 6 seconds, then turn off.
  8. Perform the initialization procedure, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
