How to remove Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear on Toyota Matrix?

Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear
Removal & Installation Procedure is as follows:---


  1. Position the front wheels straight ahead.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Because these vehicles are equipped with air bags, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
    Horn button
    Steering wheel
    Front wheels
    Left and right engine undercovers
    Left and right tie rod ends
    Column hose cover silencer sheet
    Steering intermediate shaft
    Pressure feed and return tubes
    Left and right side front stabilizer links
    Right and left front lower control arms from the ball joints
    Hood
    No. 2 cylinder head (valve) cover
  3. Install an engine support and tension it to support the engine without raising it.
    1. No. 1 engine hanger: P/N 12281-22021 1ZZ-FE, 12281-88600 2ZZ-GE.
    2. No. 2 engine hanger: P/N 12281-15040 1ZZ-FE, 12281-88600 2ZZ-GE.
    3. Bolt: P/N 91512-B1016.
    4. Torque the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).

CAUTION
Do not try to suspend the engine by hooking the chain to any other part.

  1. Attach an engine chain hoist to the hangers.

CAUTION
The engine hoist is now in place and under tension. Use care when repositioning the vehicle and make necessary adjustments to the engine support.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolt and nuts holding in the middle of the crossmember and support the crossmember with a jack
    Bolts from the outer side of the suspension crossmember
    Suspension crossmember with the steering gear assembly
    Steering intermediate shaft, after matchmarking it
    Rack and pinion steering gear from the crossmember
  2. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following specifications:
    1. Steering gear bolts and nuts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) FWD, 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm) AWD.
    2. Steering intermediate shaft: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    3. Suspension crossmember bolts: 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
    4. Engine mount insulator bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    5. Center member-to-frame bolts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    6. Stabilizer bar link-to-the lower control arms nuts: 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    7. Fluid return and pressure tubes: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    8. Tie rod ends: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    9. Wheel lug nuts: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  3. Check and top off the power steering fluid.
  4. Check and adjust the alignment, if needed.

  1. NOTE
    The steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the following components:


    NOTE
    After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.



    Steering column
    Steering shaft coupling
    Intermediate shaft
    Lower steering shaft
  2. LOCK the steering column and verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  3. Move the silencer pad away from the steering column.
  4. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering shaft coupling and on the intermediate shaft.
  5. Loosen the upper coupling bolt.
  6. Remove the lower coupling bolt.
  7. Remove the steering column hole cover from the bulkhead.
  8. Install the Engine Support Fixture.
  9. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  10. Remove the engine splash shields.
  11. Remove the 2 outer tie rod ends.
  12. Place a drain pan under the vehicle in order to collect the fluid from the power steering system.
  13. Remove the pressure and return pipes from the steering gear.
  14. Remove the bolt and the pipe bracket from the steering gear.
  15. Remove the following components together as a unit:

    Steering gear
    Intermediate steering shaft
    Front suspension crossmember
    Trans support
    Control arms
    Front stabilizer shaft
  16. Remove the bolt and the rear engine mount insulator from the crossmember.
  17. Remove the 3 bolts and the rear engine mount bracket from the crossmember.
  18. Use paint in order to place match marks on the intermediate shaft and on the steering gear.
  19. Remove the bolt and the intermediate shaft (4).
  20. Remove the 4 bolts and the steering gear from the crossmember.
To install:
  1. Install the rear engine mount bracket to the crossmember.
  2. Install the 3 bolts to the rear engine mount bracket. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  3. Install the rear engine mount insulator to the crossmember.
  4. Install the bolt to the rear engine mount insulator. Tighten to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
  5. If you are replacing the steering gear or the intermediate shaft, copy the match marks from the old parts to the same locations on the new parts.
  6. Install the steering gear and the 4 bolts to the crossmember. Tighten to 42 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  7. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Align the match marks.
  8. Install the bolt to the intermediate shaft. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  9. Install the steering column hole cover to the bulkhead.
  10. Install the following components as a unit:

    Steering gear
    Intermediate steering shaft
    Front suspension crossmember
    Trans support
    Control arms
    Front stabilizer shaft
  11. Install the 2 outer tie rod ends.
  12. Install the pressure and return pipes to the steering gear. Tighten the fittings to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  13. Install the pipe bracket bolt. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  14. Install the splash shields.
  15. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  16. Remove the Engine Support Fixture.
  17. Align the match marks on the intermediate shaft and on the steering shaft coupling.
  18. Install the lower coupling bolt. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  19. Tighten the upper coupling bolt. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  20. Place the silencer pad into the correct position.
  21. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir.
  22. Bleed the power steering system.
  23. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Repair as necessary.
  24. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust as necessary
